We are a team of people from many disciplines who are creating new music-making devices for the digital age.
The Seaboard, our award-winning musical instrument, revolutionized the piano keyboard by replacing white and black keys with a continuous, touch-responsive surface that combines the expressive capabilities of many instruments in one interface.
Our range of hardware and software products has grown since the Seaboard launched in 2013. And everything we make — from our NOISE app to our Equator software — is designed to let music-makers be more expressive. Our products connect to others in our ecosystem and to many outside of it, because we want music creation to be as conveniently seamless as other digitized areas of life. By inventing new, connected tools we are extending the joy of music-making to everyone.
We are designers
Our design process integrates form and function, as we rethink how music devices and software should look and work. While our products are technologically advanced, they are also friendly. We want music-makers of all backgrounds and technical abilities to intuitively understand how our interfaces work — and delight in how quickly they can start making music.
We design our devices to be portable, so that music creation can happen on a train platform as easily as at a desk or in a studio. And we design them to be beautiful, so that they can inspire creativity not only when they are played — but even when they are seen.
We are makers
Even as we redefine the role of digital technologies in music creation, we craft physical products and work with tangible materials. From silicone molding to assembly, we manufacture the Seaboard GRAND in a converted railway arch in London.
At the same site our team creates prototypes of new products, desks for new starts, and the hexagonal panels that cover the walls of our sound studio. Seaboards are tactile interfaces that let people physically interact with sound, and they were developed with a hands-on, makers’ mentality. That mentality extends to other products. As we iterate design concepts, we iterate with physical prototypes. We bring the precision craftsmanship of another era to the forefront of digital innovation.
We are community builders
Our team is diverse, multidisciplinary, and multitalented, and it bonds through shared activities. We start each day with a company-wide standup meeting. We sit down to a home-cooked vegetarian lunch every afternoon. Some Fridays are designated Hack Day, when the team divides into groups that solve challenges that team members propose.
Our community’s practices are designed to let every team member learn and grow. This happens during daily moments when engineers, musicians, coders, marketers, and manufacturers come together. It happens when we create space in the working day for learning about subjects that might not have a direct application to a team member’s role.
